198 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill by Saffron Housing Trust
Figures from the most recent sustainability report show that Saffron Housing Trust diverted 89.92% of waste from landfill between January 2020 and February 2021. Of 220 metric tonnes of waste Saffron’s operations produce, 198 metric tonnes was diverted from landfill. 100% of our electrical waste appliances were recycled and diverted.
It is Recycling week from 20th – 26th September, an annual celebration of recycling and the benefits to the environment. This year’s theme is “Step It Up” and everyone is being encouraged to recycle more of the right things, more often. We are using the week to remind staff and tenants about the important of recycling, as part of our commitment to improving sustainability.
In March, we were awarded a Silver award in the SHIFT 2020 Sustainability Report which reflects the level of environmental performance across the organisation. SHIFT looked at the performance of Saffron Housing Trust’s offices, existing homes, supply chains, operations, and new builds. The report covered areas including energy and resource use, transport and travel, resident engagement, climate risk, biodiversity and responsible sourcing.
Jason MacCormick, Assistant Director of Strategic Asset Management at Saffron, said “We are working really hard to meet high standards of sustainability in our homes and offices. Most of our waste is recycled and re-used, with the remaining used as fuel. We are proud of our recycling rates but this is just one area we are working on. We’re constantly looking at how we can improve the organisation’s overall environmental footprint and increase our sustainability. Recycling Week is a great reminder to both our staff and tenants that by working together, we can all do our bit to help tackle climate change.”
